Hungarian National Office for Media and Telecommunications adapts its regulations to the emerging platforms and sees new challenges. As emphasized by Balazs Jo, Deputy Director for Monitoring and Analysis of Programs at the National Office for Media and Telecommunications Council Media, the demand for controlling new platforms is growing, but regulators do not have the tools or knowledge, and sometimes also the legal system.
"Most of the information in the media is true, and most Internet users use it as their main source of information. Our office focuses on the main media providers: radio and television. It monitors the use of programs and advertisements for political purposes, controls subsidies, and verifies that broadcast programs meet the conditions of accessibility for people with disabilities. We receive more than 200,000 complaints a year, says Balazs Jo.
He adds that when it comes to monitoring TV and websites, it is difficult to find effective tools, so the Hungarian regulator seeks help from other European institutions. As of 2023, it has a monitoring system that analyzes content using artificial intelligence.
